Public Debates for the Campus Community

By Oregon Forensics Forever | October 4, 2015

Oregon Forensics has always been more than competition — it is a program rooted in the civic mission of the university. That legacy was on full display in October 2015, when the Oregon Debate team hosted the British National Team for a public debate in the Great Hall of Global Scholars Hall.

The topic — “The US should significantly increase its military presence in Syria” — reflected the program’s commitment to addressing pressing issues of international policy and public concern. Students, faculty, and community members gathered to hear arguments, weigh perspectives, and engage in dialogue about one of the most urgent foreign policy questions of the time.

Sponsored by Oregon Forensics, the University Forum, and the Clark Honors College, the event highlighted how Oregon Forensics continues its tradition of combining rigorous argumentation with civic engagement, echoing the program’s origins in the 19th-century debating societies while meeting the challenges of the modern world.
