Oregon on Fire: Public Forum on Forest Policy
By Oregon Forensics Forever | April 22, 2018
On Earth Day, April 22, 2018, Oregon Forensics partnered with the University Forum to host Oregon on Fire: Fire Ecology & Forest Policy in the Great Hall of Global Scholars Hall.
This public debate and panel discussion brought together experts, policymakers, and community members to confront one of the state’s most pressing issues: wildfire management. The program addressed critical questions such as:
- How should we manage wildland fires?
- How should we address health and safety concerns?
- How do we promote resilient, fire-adapted forests?
Panelists included Rich Fairbanks (Fairbanks Land Management), Dr. James Johnston (OSU), Amanda Stamper (The Nature Conservancy), Hon. John Stromberg (Mayor of Ashland, Oregon), Mark Webb (Blue Mountains Forest Partners), and Dr. George Wuerthner (Western Watersheds Project).
By convening these voices on Earth Day, Oregon Forensics underscored its commitment to connecting academic discourse with real-world challenges, continuing a legacy that stretches back to its 19th-century debating societies: bringing public issues to the stage, encouraging dialogue, and fostering civic engagement.
